:: The Forums & Daylight Saving Time
Why aren't the times on the forums correct?
The forums do not automatically account for Daylight Saving Time. That's the reason why the listed times seem to be off by an hour for some of you.
So, if your area observes Daylight Saving Time at all (not all do, even in the US), you have two choices.
- When your area is observing Daylight Saving Time and you want the correct times to be shown, set your Timezone setting in your profile to be one hour ahead of what it would normally be. In other words, set your Timezone setting to what it actually is based on GMT/UTC at the moment under Daylight Saving Time. For example: If your Timezone is normally GMT-6 (normally US/CA Central), under Daylight Savings you would set it to be GMT-5 (normally US/CA Eastern), since you've moved your clock one hour ahead for Daylight Saving Time.
- Your only other recourse is to leave your Timezone setting alone and remember that while your area is under Daylight Saving Time the times on the forums will be one hour behind you.
Additionally, here are two RasCals Forums FAQ entries on the subject.
Why don't the forums account for Daylight Saving Time?
Good question. The short answer: because it's a pain in the arse. The long answer: because the rules for when Daylight Saving Time starts and stops vary across the world and there are those places that do not even observe Daylight Saving Time (even in the US; Arizona, Hawaii, most of Indiana, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands do not observe Daylight Saving Time), and I can only assume that the phpBB developers didn't think it was worth the hassle to try and codify the rules for all areas of the world. |
